According to a study conducted by Amref Health Africa, only 50% of girls openly discuss menstruation at home, and just 12% would feel comfortable receiving information from their mothers. Additionally, the statistics reveal that 2 out of 3 pad users in rural Kenya receive them from sexual partners and 1 in 4 girls do not associate menstruation with pregnancy highlighting how menstrual hygiene management is tied to gender inequity and other fundamental risks.
Despite massive campaigns by non-governmental organizations, local and national governments, Grades 6 and 7 continue to record huge numbers of girl dropouts. About 76% of girls in Kajiado county do not attend school, due to period poverty.
Adolescent girls in this area face a range of challenges that may compromise their chances of completing school or their sexual reproductive health. These challenges can even be further complicated by family dynamics and the girls' feelings of shame about their bodies which makes them lose confidence in life.
